The “Force” May Not Be With You
November 21, 2017
December 14, 2017 marks the day “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is scheduled to appear in theatres across the country. No doubt, lines will be long and start forming hours before the first showing, as patrons vie to be among the first to see the latest Lucas Films offering, and remember again those epic words, “The force will be with you.”
I’m not interested in debating the theology or teleology of the Star Wars sagas. But I AM convinced that there is, for certain, one kind of ‘force’ that may not be ‘with us,’ (no matter what Yoda said.) It’s the force … of habit.
Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary says that ‘force of habit’ is a ‘behavior made involuntary or automatic by repeated practice.’ What I practice, I get good at. (Doctors who practice medicine, of course, know that better than anyone!) If I play piano, and I practice my scales until I can do them in my sleep, I become very skilled at playing scales. But if I practice them incorrectly, then likewise —through sheer force of habit — my muscle memory learns an incorrect pattern. In other words, if through repeated practice, I learn how not to play a scale, my incorrect playing becomes involuntary or automatic IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!
The Apostle Paul, in Rom. 7 wrote that “what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Sound familiar? We all have practices and habits and things in our lives that we’d like to see changed. But breaking the ‘force of habit’ reality can be a challenge.
