CMDA Statement on Capitol Violence
January 7, 2021
The Christian Medical & Dental Associations was shocked and appalled on January 6th by the rioters who attacked and invaded our nation’s Capitol while Congress was in session. We strongly condemn these acts of violence and lawlessness, specifically under the pretense of any righteous endeavor or the banner of Christ’s cross. Just as Jesus rebuked Peter to put away his sword (Matt 26:52), the kingdom of God is not advanced by destructive force. The desecration and destruction of government property by the rioters brings shame upon all who were involved.
We also renounce the evil of political idolatry and pray specifically against its stronghold among us. We have seen how both right and left parties use propaganda and self-righteous behaviors to divide us against one another, rather than uniting us against the rulers, powers, and spiritual forces of darkness (Eph 6:12). Our mission is to advance biblical principles impacting healthcare, as we are given opportunities, at the federal and state levels of government. We firmly believe it is critical to support our democracy and our constitution in obedience to Paul’s command in Rom. 13:1 & 2. As God commanded the exiles in Babylon, we also should “seek the welfare of the city…and pray to the Lord on its behalf” (Jer 29:7). As lovers of truth, we must be among the first to expose half-truths and boastful lies, using Scripture to amplify the voice of justice, rather than to silence it.
With humility and sincerity, we must discuss the things that divide us first in order to meaningfully move towards the heart of God who sent Christ as our Peace, destroying the dividing wall of hostility (Eph 2:14). We pray for a radical return to God by His people as we seek Him with all our hearts and lean into His promise to redeem, renew, and restore us (Jer 29:13-14). We call for corporate repentance and prayer as well as a fuller reflection of the heart of the God of Justice by all our fellow believers in CMDA. Our prayers are also with the families of those five individuals who lost their lives in the Capitol breech, for all life bears His image.
