Burnout and God's Will

Meet Our Guests on This Episode

Dr. Ruth Haley Barton is founding president and CEO of the Transforming Center, a ministry dedicated to strengthening the souls of pastors, Christian leaders and the congregations and organizations they serve. For more than 20 years, she has ministered to the soul care needs of pastors and leaders based upon her conviction that the best thing we bring to leadership is our own transforming selves. Trained at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation and the Institute for Pastoral Studies at Loyola University Chicago, Ruth is a seasoned retreat leader and spiritual director. A sought-after speaker and preacher, she has served on the pastoral staff of several churches and teaches frequently at seminaries and graduate schools. Ruth is the author of numerous books and resources on the spiritual life, including Invitation to Solitude and Silence, Sacred Rhythms, Longing for More, Pursuing God’s Will Together and Life Together in Christ. She continues to share her thoughts and perspectives on soulful leadership through an online resource called eReflections, as well as a podcast entitled Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership.

Barney M. Davis, Jr., MD, is a general psychiatrist in Phoenix, Arizona whose work providing counseling and consultative services to members of the international missionary community takes him to many remote areas. A graduate of The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Barney also completed postgraduate psychiatry residency at UTMB, and his areas of clinical interest have included geriatric, consultation-liaison and neuropsychiatric disorders. Following several years of service with the U.S. Navy, he worked in private practice in Galveston and Bryan, Texas before relocating to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. His regular pursuits of general aviation, Dixieland jazz and offshore sailing were initially interrupted by his salvation 33 years ago. Subsequent short-term medical mission trips led him to awareness of the need for “member care,” addressing the emotional health needs of missionaries serving far from home. Through the organization of Godspeed Resources Connection, he has continued to provide both on-field and virtual (telepsychiatry) care to missionaries in multiple locations. Barney serves as an officer within the CMDA Psychiatry Section. Barney’s wife, psychiatric nurse and co-therapist Karen Grace Davis succumbed to early onset Pick’s Disease in 2015.
